This post came out a week ago on my Patreon. Somewhere deep in the unending sand is the original settlement where the star fell, and around that are the original dustblights, now decades or centuries old, creating more of their kind and making plans for something big. They take away the survivors, vanishing into the desert to never be seen again. More dangerous however are the dustblights that hunt for more than just prey. They take advantage of this to crawl into openings far too small for their average 6 and a half foot height, cornering small burrowing animals or pushing through gaps in outer walls to invade a settlement. While they generally keep a humanoid form, their bodies are made of wet dust and ash and so are far more malleable than the body of a humanoid. They hunt for blood, drinking it from the living or dead to replenish the liquid that keeps their body moist and mobile. Most dustblights people encounter are simple, almost feral things. Well before the physical transformation was finished their minds were already gone, replaced by something from the depths of space that carried no love for the world that was its new home, and the dustblights have ever since been hunting for a way off this world to return to whatever home the star first came from. Rivulets of blood flowed through this ash, creating a web of red lines over the outside of their body as the corruption dug deeper into them.

Their skin started crumbling, turning into a grey ash and flaking off. The people began to change, warped by the presence of the fallen star. Was it a good omen, or bad?Īs it turned out, the omen was very bad. A star fell from the sky into the middle of the settlement, damaging a central building and drawing the people in to try and portent the meaning of it. Legend holds that dustblights came from a horrible, otherworldly corruption on a desert dwelling community.
